Hacker Attacks – Exciting Days Preferred – Economy

According to a study, companies in the USA pay attention to the general news situation when announcing hacker attacks. They reported data leaks preferably on days when other reports dominated the headlines, according to a study by the Technical University of Munich. In doing so, they avoided greater price losses on the stock market, but at the same time risked greater damage from data misuse. On hectic days, editors and analysts have to prioritize which information they pick up, said study author Jens Förderer. “Our results suggest that companies strategically plan their disclosure of data leaks and deliberately aim for less attention.” In the US, companies have between 30 and 90 days, depending on the state, before they have to comment on a data leak. In the European Union, on the other hand, a hacker attack that poses a risk to the persons concerned must be reported within 72 hours, according to the study. The experts examined the disclosure of more than 8,000 data leaks by publicly traded US companies between 2008 and 2018.
