Hacker attack in the USA: T-Mobile confirms data theft

The Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile US has been the victim of a hacker attack. It is still unclear which and how much data was stolen. According to a media report, millions of customers could be affected.

The Deutsche Telekom subsidiary has confirmed a hacker attack on T-Mobile US. However, the mobile phone provider said that attackers only had access to some customer data. At the moment they are in the process of getting an overview. However, the company was confident that it had identified the gateway for the hack and closed it.

At the weekend, the Vice Motherboard website reported that around 100 million customer data had been stolen from the US company’s servers – including name, telephone number, address, US social security number and driver’s license data.

Important social security number

The social security numbers in particular are a neuralgic point in the USA. Because it can be used to assume the identity of another person and, for example, order a credit card. You can then use it to shop online.

The hackers originally posted a message on a forum. There they had initially offered 30 million social security numbers and asked for six Bitcoin – the equivalent of 237,000 euros.
