Gurman: a discontinued 14″ iPad and a more metallic Magic Keyboard

The iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard is set to get a major overhaul next year, resulting in a closer resemblance to Mac laptop keyboards.

Last week, in his Sunday newsletter at BloombergMark Gurman mentioned a new design for the Magic Keyboard to accompany the iPad Pro 2024. The accessory would look more like an Apple laptop keyboard, he said, thanks to a larger trackpad.

The Magic Keyboard today

new secrets, collected since, allow him to say that Apple will also modify the materials used for the part that surrounds the keyboard and the trackpad (the “top case”). It should be made of aluminum while the outer faces would retain the current texture.

It is not said that aluminum leads to overweight – it could reinforce the rigidity of the part and give it a certain cachet – but one can wonder if it will not lead to an additional cost for this accessory. It is already very expensive as it is: 369 and 429 € depending on the size).

No word yet on other possible changes, such as adding a row of function keys. The USB-C socket will be maintained, only Gurman specifies, and there will always be only one.

Finally, Gurman slips that Apple very nearly offered a 14″ iPad Pro, a project at least two years old. However, the product ended up being discounted before the cost of such a model equipped with an OLED screen. Apple has planned to start the migration to this type of panel on the iPad Pro 2024 next spring/summer.
