A guest stayed in a five-star hotel in Delhi for almost two years and never paid the bill of almost 65,000 euros. The receptionist helped him with this.

An Indian lived in a hotel room for a total of 603 days – almost two years – without paying for it. In May 2019, he checked into the five-star Roseate House hotel near the Indian capital Delhi, reports the Indian Express newspaper. During the entire time he did not pay his bills until he left the hotel again in January 2021.

Originally, the guest had only booked the room for one night, but then always stayed longer. So there was never any trouble. He is said to have gotten away with his scam for so long because he is said to have worked together with the chief receptionist. The man was responsible for the bookings and bills – and simply extended the guest’s booking without informing management.

Even when the guest left, no discrepancies were noticed. It was only recently known how long the man had scrounged through. The unpaid bill ultimately amounted to the equivalent of almost 65,000 euros. The police said the management had to be informed of outstanding invoices of this amount. In this case, however, that did not happen.

Investigators believe the chief receptionist falsified the records and even removed the guest’s name from the books. “The hotel staff is said to have falsified, deleted, supplemented and falsified numerous entries in the account of the said guest in the hotel’s software system,” the police summarized the allegations. There have been no arrests so far, but the hotel employee and the guest are being investigated for fraud and counterfeiting, among other things.
