Guest contribution by historian Dan Diner: The Memory of War – Culture

The Russian war in and against Ukraine triggers a cascade of kaleidoscopically fragmented, paradoxical images, and not just in Jewish memory. While the name Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj is associated with a bloodbath of the Jewish population that has become iconic due to the Cossack rebellion against the ruling Polish landlords in 1648, the name Volodimir Zelenskij appears there today – the Jewish President of the fighting Ukraine. Such a constellation overthrows the ingrained, emblematic, negative Jewish memory images of Ukraine.
