Runoff election for the presidency in Guatemala: According to the Supreme Electoral Court, the left-wing candidate Bernardo Arévalo has prevailed. After counting almost all votes, Arévalo comes to 59 percent. This ended the right-wing camp’s rule in the country plagued by corruption after twelve years. His rival Sandra Torres got around 36 percent of the vote. In the first round of voting at the end of June, Arévalo surprisingly made it into the runoff. It became necessary in the country suffering from poverty and violence after Arévalo surprisingly came second in the first round of voting on June 25. The 64-year-old is the son of the country’s first democratically elected president, Juan José Arévalo. He has promised, among other things, to improve the education system and fight violence.
