Study: IT security market breaks sales record

Cyber attacks have become a major threat to businesses and administrations. To protect yourself from this, more and more money is being spent in Germany.
The fear of ransomware and data leaks brings the IT industry good business. According to the digital association Bitkom, the market for IT security in Germany continues to grow.
This year, 6.2 billion euros are expected to be spent on hardware, software and services in this area. This is the first time that the threshold of six billion euros has been exceeded. The new high is 9.7 percent above the previous record year 2020 (5.6 billion euros in sales). The numbers were calculated by the market research company IDC for Bitkom.
“Cyber attacks have become an existential threat to the economy,” said Susanne Dehmel, a member of the Bitkom management team. For companies and administrations, a high level of IT security is essential for survival and must be an integral part of good management. «The Corona crisis has shown how vulnerable many companies are. The expenditure for IT security will continue to rise in the future. “
For the coming year, Bitkom expects an increase in sales of almost ten percent to 6.8 billion euros. Growth rates of this magnitude will continue in the years to come. For 2025, the association forecasts industry sales of around 8.9 billion euros.
Half of the funds for more IT security go into services. Expenditures are expected to amount to 3.1 billion euros in 2021 – an increase of 9.8 percent. Companies in Germany are investing around 2.3 billion euros in IT security software this year, 11.4 percent more than in the previous year. A further 815 million euros are accounted for by special devices and hardware (plus 4.9 percent).
The association called for IT security to be established as a political priority in the new legislative period. “The security of our technologies is decisive for the resilience to crises, success and sovereignty of the German economy,” said Dehmel.
