Whether in a salad, in a sauce or simply eaten raw – tomatoes are popular. They are even the most eaten vegetable in this country. In Germany, around 28 kilograms are consumed per capita every year, in Austria, according to Statista, even 34.9 kilograms of tomato. They are available in different shapes and colors, the great thing about the sweet vegetables: you can easily grow them yourself. However, one thing should be noted: If you planted tomatoes in the bed last year, you should not plant tomatoes in the same place again. But the related potatoes, aubergines or peppers should also be planted in another bed. In the following year, less consuming plants can take the place of the nightshade family. Otherwise it can’t be sunny and warm enough for the tomatoes. But you should protect them from direct rain. When planting, remember that tomato plants need space. Therefore, leave 60 to 90 cm space between them and think of a stable climbing aid.
