Great victory: Mainz shoots home curse against Cologne from the stadium

As of: 10/21/2022 11:33 p.m

1. FSV Mainz 05 defeated 1. FC Köln on Friday evening (21.10.22) and scored a big win at home with a 5-0 (3-0) win. The Rheinhessen were last in the home table before the game and are third in the overall tableau at least until Saturday.

Mainz made everything clear before the break: Marcus Ingvartsen (11th), Dominik Kohr (35th) and Anton Stach (40th) scored for FSV. After the break, Aarón Martín increased (73′), Karim Onisiwo added the final point (84′). Two other Mainz goals were disallowed after video evidence. Cologne had to play outnumbered for more than an hour after Luca Kilian received a yellow-red card.

Baumgart speaks plain language

“The mood is obviously good”said Bo Svensson, the coach of FSV Mainz 05, after the game, “But we had problems with Cologne until we were sent off. Then the game went our way.” Cologne’s Steffen Baumgart summed it up soberly: “The game was initially even. But then everything went against us – first the penalty, yellow-red was then the next blow in the neck. I’ll check off this game very, very quickly.” And added: “We got kicked, unfortunately that’s part of football.”

The Rheinhessen used their opportunities efficiently. Cologne also had a few chances at the beginning, dear too imprecise in the end. After Kilian was sent off, the guests seemed unsettled – which Mainz efficiently exploited. Coach Bo Svensson’s side recorded the biggest win in their first division history.

Wild initial phase

In a wild early phase, Mainz’s Jae-Sung Lee (2nd) hit the crossbar before Kilian Onisiwo fell in the penalty area. Ingvartsen converted safely from the point. National coach Hansi Flick then saw an intense game with a lot of speed and a strong Stach. Cologne had a top-class chance to equalize through Steffen Tigges (14th), but after the second foul against Onisiwo the overwhelmed Kilian flew off the field – and Mainz managed almost everything with a majority.

Kohr pushed in after preliminary work from the tirelessly fighting Onisiwo, Stach increased after one of the numerous quick attacks with a powerful shot into the far corner – and did self-promotion shortly before the Qatar World Cup. The Mainz team stayed in touch after the break.

Kainz hit the post

With the clear lead in the back, Svensson’s team took their foot off the gas pedal – and was almost punished for it. Kainz (57th) hit the post with a free kick from 25 meters. Substitute Angelo Fulgini then scored the next goal for Mainz (60′).

FC goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe shot Onisiwo unchallenged, but because the ball bounced off the Austrian’s arm and hit Fulgini, the goal didn’t count according to the video images. With Martin’s free kick to make it 4-0, on the other hand, everything went well. The supposed 5:0 by Jonathan Burkardt (81st) didn’t count, unlike a little later at Onisiwo.

Cologne initially required internationally

Before it continues nationally, 1. FC Köln has to travel to 1. FC Slovacko on matchday 5 of the Conference League group stage (Thursday, October 27th, 2022 at 6.45 p.m.).
