Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale goes to Australia – Culture

This year’s Golden Lion at the Venice Art Biennale goes to the Australian entry, the installation “kith and kin” (German: Friends and Family) by Archie Moore. The jury announced this on Saturday afternoon. The artist, who comes from Australia’s Kamilaroi and Bigambul First Nations, drew his family tree with chalk on the walls of his country’s pavilion. It includes 3,500 people and goes back hundreds of years. There are always gaps in this because the genealogy of the First Nations often remains undocumented. Moore explained that he wanted his work to commemorate the oppression of Aboriginal people by European settlers. “We are all one and share responsibility for all living things, now and in the future,” he said.
