The nominations for the Golden Globes have been announced in Los Angeles. The awards are actually seen as the harbingers of the Oscars. But this time a lot is different.

Rapper Snoop Dogg is not known as an early bird – even so, he stood at the Beverly Hilton Hotel at six and read some of the nominations for the Golden Globes. Perhaps the organizers of the Golden Globes had hoped for a loose line from Snoop Dogg. You could certainly have used him. Because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the association of the foreign press, was heavily criticized last year. The allegations: lack of transparency in the nominations and a lack of diversity in their own ranks.

There were no black journalists among the less than 100 members. As a result, Golden Globe winner Tom Cruise returned his prizes, and there was a downright boycott of the HFPA in Hollywood.

“Most diverse group in history”

HFPA President Helen Hoehne therefore promised improvement. They worked tirelessly on changes for eight months. “We have new rules, a new statute and have invited 21 new members, the largest, most diverse group in 79-year history,” said the German journalist.

What is new is that the broadcasters and studios did not have to submit films and series themselves in order to be nominated. However, it may also have avoided the problem that not enough broadcasters and studios had submitted films and series to the race.

The films with the most nominations include the western “Power of the Dog” and the black and white drama “Belfast”, each with seven nominations.

In the series, “Succession” is the favorite with five nominations. The series “Ted Lasso” and “The Morning Show” followed with four nominations each. The German music composer Hans Zimmer was also nominated – in the best film music category for his contribution to the film “Dune”.

Lady Gaga and Will Smith nominated

Among the actresses, among others, Lady Gaga for “House of Gucci” or Kristen Stewart as Lady Diana in “Spencer” have opportunities in the area of drama. In the same category, Will Smith for “King Richard” and Denzel Washington for “The Tragedy of MacBeth” were nominated for men.

It is questionable whether the nominees will also be present at the event on January 9th. Because of the criticism of the organizers, the TV broadcaster NBC canceled the broadcast of the Golden Globes on television.

The association of the foreign press still wants to hold a ceremony. What this should look like is not yet known. Whether the show is relevant enough without a big stage remains to be seen. To make matters worse: The Critics Choice Awards take place on the same day, another prestigious award ceremony – but this is not criticized.
