Heart racing, gasping for breath, tears: the makeover regularly causes excitement on GNTM. This year, men also have to lose their hair – and suffer more than women.

GNTM 2024: What happened?

It’s the moment in everyone GNTM season is eagerly awaited: the makeover. Heidi Klum selects ten candidates and three candidates who have to sit in the hairdresser’s chair. The men are affected by Armin as well as Julian and Luka. All three are not happy. “If my brother looks completely different than me, it will be very strange and take some getting used to,” fears Julian. The twins have made it their trademark to look completely identical: from their clothes to their jewelry to their hairstyle. But Klum thinks it’s time for a change. “It’s good if you’re a little more independent and don’t always appear as a double act. There’s currently a 100 percent risk of confusion.”

In fact, there is no noticeable difference after the makeover: both get short, peroxide-blond hairstyles. Luka has a little more curl left, Julian wears his hair shorter. The hairstyle was given to him by Heidi Klum herself. The 50-year-old reports that her mother Erna is a trained hairdresser and that she was always used as a guinea pig as a child. Now Klum takes the scissors himself and snips at Julian’s tips. Armin clearly has to lose his hair: instead of a quiff, he now wears it razor-short. A shock for the 27-year-old, who doesn’t recognize himself. “That’s just my kindergarten haircut,” he says. Among the women, Lea and Jana receive the most radical changes. Lea now has a short blonde haircut instead of long brown hair, Jana has to endure nine hours – then she has a platinum blonde mane instead of brown curls.

Excitement of the week

The makeover is understandably causing a stir. Surprisingly, it is men who have more problems with change than women. Julian in particular suffers from his bleaching. The 24-year-old complains that his scalp burns and the colors have to be washed out and reapplied several times. Candidate Sara follows the procedure with amazement and comments: “I didn’t expect that the men would be the ones crying during the makeover.”

There is further excitement over the decision, which takes place outdoors in front of the Auditorio de Tenerife, a concert hall in the north of the island. The huge lamps and spotlights on the set blind the landing planes at the nearby airport. The police drive up to warn the production team. In order to finish the shoot as quickly as possible, all candidates must appear in front of the jury at the same time. “I thought I’d experienced everything in 19 years of ‘Germany’s Next Top Model’. But that’s really never happened before,” says Klum.

The guest juror

In episode six, Heidi Klum brought Jourdan Dunn, a real top model, to her side. The Brit has been working in the fashion industry since she was 15, running for luxury labels such as Chanel, Burberry and Louis Vuitton. In 2008, she was the first black model to be booked by Prada for a fashion show in ten years. She has the following tip for the young models: “If you want to be successful, it is very important to be punctual, polite and professional.” When making the decision, Dunn and Klum assess the candidates’ performances on the catwalk. Presence and personality are particularly important, says the 33-year-old. Armin, Jermaine, Maximilian, Aldin and Dominic impress among the men. The best women include Sara, Stella, Lea and Kadidja.

Who has to go?

Franz, Livingsten and Leoni have to leave the show. All three were unable to impress on the catwalk. Franz has a beautiful face, says Heidi Klum, but the fire was missing on the catwalk. The decision comes as a surprise to Leoni. She was still self-confident after the makeover and was extremely happy with her new hairstyle. “I look like Lena Gercke,” she enthused. She won the first GNTM season in 2006. A dream that Leoni now has to say goodbye to.
