Glyphosate: Bayer has to pay more than 1.5 billion dollars – economy

According to an agency report, a jury in the USA has sentenced the Bayer subsidiary Monsanto to pay more than 1.5 billion dollars in another glyphosate trial. Three former users of the weed killer Roundup, which contains glyphosate, have sued because they attributed their cancer to the product, the Bloomberg agency reported. The plaintiffs were awarded a total of $61.1 million in actual damages and $500 million each in punitive damages. Bloomberg quoted a Bayer spokesman as saying it had strong arguments to overturn the recent unfounded rulings. Bayer has always rejected the allegations against glyphosate. Authorities worldwide have classified the drug as non-carcinogenic. The World Health Organization (WHO) cancer research agency IARC, however, rated the active ingredient as “probably carcinogenic” in 2015. At the beginning of November, Bayer was sentenced to pay a plaintiff millions of dollars.
