Gladbach sports director Max Eberl: It was Alexis Sanchez, Miralem Pjanic and Kevin De Bruyne’s turn

Max Eberl has been doing good work at Gladbach for many years. Now he spoke about failed transfers of later world stars.

Sports director Max Eberl of Borussia Mönchengladbach looked back on his time with the foals and revealed that with Alexis Sanchez, Miralem Pjanic and Kevin De Bruyne, three future top stars were in their sights.

“We were thinking about transferring Sanchez before he went to Udinese Calcio in 2006. I was still the youth coordinator and I was in contact with him,” the 48-year-old explained in the Sports picture.

Eberl has been sports director at Gladbach since 2008

There was an exchange with Pjanic “when he was still playing in Luxembourg,” continued Eberl. “And Kevin De Bruyne was a big topic here, but he moved from Genk to Chelsea in 2012 for nine million euros.”

Eberl started in 2005 as a junior coordinator for the five-time German champions. Since 2008 he has held the post of sports director.
