Giro d’Italia – Stage 7: Lopez defends pink jersey – Jumbo celebrates stage win by Koen Bouwman

For Lennard Kämna, the 7th stage did not go as hoped: The leap into the pink jersey did not succeed, the mountain jersey was lost.

Koen Bouwman, who conquered this jersey and won the stage in particular, was able to celebrate twice – which brought the previously disappointing Giro back on track with a sense of achievement for Team Jumbo.

Team Bora also lost the lead in the team classification, with Trek overtaking them by ten seconds. For the racing team of the old and new overall leader Juan Pablo Lopez, this is a consolation for Bauke Mollema’s narrowly missed stage win.

Giro ticker: 7th stage live – four-way battle for victory

Bouwman, Dumoulin, Formolo and Mollema have made the journey. There are only 17 kilometers to go and their advantage over the field is 3:25 minutes. So the stage win is decided at the front. The short climb to the bonus sprint seven kilometers before the finish can decide who wins the stage.

Mountain classification: Kämna falls behind

Bouwman also gets the last climb of the day and thus slightly extends his lead in the climb. He now has 68 points and Kämna with 43 points well behind him. Poels (27) and Formolo (25) follow in the ranking of the best climbers.

16:30: Stage 7 live – 25 kilometers to go

It took some effort for Mollema and Dumoulin, but Formolo was caught again two kilometers before the mountains classification. The trio even becomes a quartet again, because Bouwman also catches up. He could score points again in the mountains classification.

Now Dumoulin picks up the pace, but the rest are paying attention. Only Camargo has to let go. Shortly thereafter, Dumoulin launches the second attack. Formolo sticks to his rear wheel. Bouwman and Mollema have to fight a little bit more. Villella has also fallen behind.

Poels is now being caught by the field. The foot of the descent has been reached and it’s straight into the next hill. This stage offers little opportunity for relaxation. Villella made it back into the top group after his defect. The field is still a little over five minutes behind. Ineos drives there at the top.

7th Giro stage in the ticker – 53 kilometers left

Since the field is approaching the ascent rather slowly and the gap has risen again to 5:30 minutes, the Dutchman Koen Bouwman from Team Jumbo-Visma is currently driving in the virtual pink jersey. He has already conquered the mountain jersey.

3:30 p.m.: The leading group is getting smaller

Villella has not yet returned to the top flight after a technical problem, while Wout Poels now seems to have fallen back for good. Like Formolo, Bouwman and Dumoulin still look relaxed. Mollema and Camargo suffer a little more obviously.

The pace in the field is relatively easy. No team wants to take control of the action yet.

Giro ticker: Next mountain classification is coming up

Bouwman grabs the first intermediate sprint as he passes. The points distributed here will not have a major impact in the sprint classification, but the bonus seconds may have. Now we go up the climb of the 2nd category, there are 6.6 kilometers at 9.1%.

The field has also become a bit more nervous, the helpers are trying to place their captains. This reduces the gap to the leaders 65 kilometers from the finish to just 4:30 minutes.

Battle for pink on Giro stage 7

In the overall standings, Bouwman is 5:30 minutes behind, Mollema 5:49 minutes, Villella 6:39 minutes and Dumoulin 8:20 minutes. Camargo and Poels already have bigger deficits. This is of course a comfortable position for Trek-Segafredo: Mollema can fight for the stage win without having to work too much. And Lopez’s helpers don’t have to reduce the gap to the group to “Hell come out”, since Mollema could also take over Rosa if necessary.

We are now approaching the steep ramps of Monte Grande di Viggiano and before that the intermediate sprint. In the next few kilometers it will be decided how the race will develop: will the escapees fight it out among themselves or is one of the favorites planning a daring attack?

The lead remains constant, the track now climbs again, up to the intermediate sprint on an uncategorized climb. Then it goes up to the third of the four mountain classifications of this stage.

The descent is over and the gap between the leaders and the field is now 5:30 minutes. The racing situation is calm at the moment, the first of the two intermediate sprints of this 7th stage follows in 20 kilometers.

2:20 p.m.: Mountain classification goes to Bouwman

The leading group passes the 1st category mountain classification and goes into the long descent. Koen Bouwman wins the Bergpreis, who collects 40 points and is now very close behind Lennard Kämna.
The next points go to Poels (18), Mollema (12), Formolo (9) and Dumouin (6).

After the flat part of the ascent, the last, more difficult kilometers are up to the mountain classification. The lead has increased to over four minutes for the seven breakaways of Tom Dumoulin, Davide Formolo and Bauke Mollema.

Now, on the climb, a situation is forming with two groups just ahead of the field: Formolo, Poels, Villella and Bouwman are in front, followed by Mollema, Camargo and Dumoulin. Behind the field – but all within about half a minute.

7th Giro stage: Mountain classification begins – 130 kilometers to go

The key data for this mountain classification of the 1st category on Monte Sirino (1402 m): It is 24.4 kilometers uphill, but very irregular – there are flat sections and descents interspersed with this distance.
This cuts the incline at just 3.8%, but it also gets steep up to 12%. The last part of the mountain is much harder than the first eight kilometers now.

Now Lennard Kämna tries his luck and attacks – but his rival in the pink jersey, the Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez, reacts and goes with him. The gaps remain very small, so Richard Carapaz’s action has been neutralized again.

The situation continues to be almost the same: the drivers drive extremely fast, the breakaways remain in sight and the field doesn’t let up. After the rain-soaked descent, the longest climb of this stage begins, where the cards are reshuffled.

The first of four climbs today is the easiest of the day on this coast-to-backcountry ride. It goes up 9.3 kilometers, 421 meters in altitude have to be mastered. The average gradient is 4.5 percent over the total distance, but there is also a 12% ramp at this Passo Colla (altitude 594 m).

The battle for the leading group has been going on for more than 45 minutes, and today there is nothing to be seen of the lazy pace of yesterday’s stage. The attacks continue, but no one has really been successful so far, the field keeps bringing back the escaped drivers. The foot of the first ascent is approaching, and many pros will try again there.

The terrain is getting bumpier now, but it’s still a long way to the first mountain classification. The hard fight for the escape group of the day continues unabated. Many, almost too many teams sense their chance today and this neutralizes every attack again. There’s a lot at stake today – stage win, pink jersey, mountain jersey!

Giro d’Italia: No top group yet

Lots of movement in the peloton and still no real breakaway group that has been able to break away. Some drivers continue to try their luck, but the gaps are still small. Thomas De Gendt from Team Lotto Soudal is a bit ahead as a soloist, but the Belgian is still hoping for an accompanist, otherwise it will be a very long solo today on the most difficult terrain. It’s still 185 kilometers to the finish in Potenza.
