Giorgia Meloni: repressive in Italy, supple in the EU – Opinion

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is making every effort not to attract negative attention in the EU. At home, however, she has no objections to relativising historical fascism and discriminating against minorities in the here and now.

In Rome on April 25th, the aerobatic team will once again dash over the altar of the fatherland and spray the tricolor on the sky: La Festa della Liberazione is a public holiday. Everywhere in Italy one commemorates the partisans and everyone in the resistance who fought for liberation from the German occupiers and Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship. The anniversary is not round, but it is the first since a coalition governed by a right-wing nationalist, post-fascist party sets the tone. Before the holiday it was a discord.
