The jury in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial could not make a decision before the holidays. Guilty or not, that will continue to be negotiated next Monday. Until then, the defendant will remain in prison.

The jury holds long deliberations in the case of Ghislaine Maxwell in New York. Trial observers who assumed that the jury could come to a decision before Christmas were taught otherwise. Because the twelve people who have to decide guilty or innocent need more time.

Ghislaine Maxwell: Christmas behind bars

Next Monday they go into the fourth day of their decision making. For Ghislaine Maxwell that means: Christmas behind bars. And the British woman will also spend her 60th birthday on Christmas Day in prison.

However, that should be their smallest concern. Because the charges against them have it all. The jury deliberates on six specific allegations. The indictment accuses sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s girlfriend of systematically recruiting minors for Epstein over the years, who were then sexually abused by the well-connected financial investor. Specifically, she is charged with sex trafficking between 1994 and 2004 on six counts. If found guilty, she could spend the rest of her life in prison.

Epstein’s accomplice or innocent?

Maxwell’s defense lawyers argued against it and wanted to paint a different picture of the British woman. She was not as closely connected to Epstein as is assumed. They accused the prosecutor of looking for a scapegoat in Maxwell because the sex offender Epstein could no longer be prosecuted after his suicide in custody.

However, the witnesses who testified in court did not share this view. Four alleged Epstein victims testified during the three-week trial. Two of them say they were only 14 years old when the sexual abuse began. It remains to be seen whether the jury will come to a decision after Christmas. One thing is clear: this will not be a relaxed party for Ghislaine Maxwell.
