In November, the federal and state governments agreed on a discounted Germany ticket for students for the summer semester. But not everywhere you are already that far. And some universities don’t participate at all. An overview.

With the summer semester now beginning, many of the approximately three million students in Germany can use a discounted Germany ticket for 29.40 euros. It allows you to travel nationwide on local and regional buses and trains. But the decision by the federal and state governments at the start of the semester is not implemented everywhere. Some universities are not participating at all – for example where the current semester ticket is cheaper. The universities and their student bodies must conclude contracts with the respective transport companies for the ticket. An overview:

Baden-Württemberg

The “D-Ticket JugendBW” has been available in Baden-Württemberg since December for 365 euros per year. Like the Deutschlandticket, both tickets entitle you to use local buses and trains nationwide.

Bavaria

The Free State continues to go its own way with the “Bavarian reduction ticket” for 29 euros per month, which students, trainees and volunteers have been able to use since September. The price of a semester ticket is fully offset against the price of the discount ticket. According to the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG), it is also possible to voluntarily purchase a discount ticket as an upgrade to the existing semester ticket.

Berlin and Brandenburg

Of the 36 universitiesThe Berlin Senate Transport Administration announced that around 80 percent were in favor of the Deutschlandticket at a monthly price of 29.40 euros, with which there are already semester ticket agreements with the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB). The remaining universities decided again in favor of a VBB semester ticket due to different semester periods. The semester ticket currently costs around 32 euros in Berlin and 34 to 36 euros in Brandenburg.

Hamburg and Hesse

The 120,000 students 17 Hessian and around 85,000 students at 25 universities in Hamburg have been able to use local public transport throughout Germany with the new Deutschlandticket since the beginning of March or the beginning of April – depending on the start of the semester. Instead of the regular 49 euros, you only pay 29.40 euros.

Rhineland-Palatinate

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the Deutschlandticket for students initially starts in the summer semester Mainz and Trier, Koblenz should follow in the winter semester.

North Rhine-Westphalia

With the change of semester, most universities in North Rhine-Westphalia are also switching from the previous semester ticket to the discounted Germany ticket. This applies to universities, for example Cologne, Dusseldorf, Muenster, Bochum, Duisburg food and Bonnthe TU Dortmund as well as the universities in Aachen and Bielefeld. More are to follow in the winter semester. Unlike the Deutschlandticket, the previous semester ticket was not valid nationwide, but only in the respective transport association.

Saxony

Most students at Saxon universities can use the discounted Germany ticket from the summer semester – for example Dresden, Leipzig and Zwickau. An agreement with the TU Chemnitz is in the works, said the Central Saxony Transport Association. In Freiberg and Mittweida On the other hand, the students showed no interest. Just like there, students at many German universities can decide for themselves whether they want to switch to the Deutschlandticket.

In Lusatia, students still have to be patient: at the university Zittau/Görlitz The discounted Germany ticket will only be offered from the winter semester 2024/2025 at the end of September. For the students of Saxony Vocational Academy Different rules apply depending on the location Leipzig about there is the offer.

Saxony-Anhalt

In many places, the current regional semester ticket is significantly cheaper than the nationwide Germany ticket – for example at universities Magdeburg, Wernigerode and Stendal. So here it is a cost-benefit decision. Since the surveys are still ongoing, the change could not take place until the winter semester at the earliest, said a spokeswoman for the Magdeburg student union. In Hall and Merseburg However, students can use the discounted Deutschlandticket nationwide from April 1st.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania only the university does this Rostock with. The University Greifswald as well as the universities Stralsund and Neubrandenburg have decided against the ticket.

Lower Saxony, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein, Bremen

In Lower Saxony and in Saarland The Germany ticket for students will not be available until the winter semester. Likewise in Bremen. In Schleswig-Holstein, the offer is also being targeted for the winter semester of 2024/25. The planning is still ongoing, according to the AStA at the University of Lübeck.

Thuringia

If at all, the Germany ticket for students should not come until the winter semester. The Central Thuringia Transport Association announced that the start of the 2024 summer semester envisaged by the federal and state governments was unrealistic from the start. And especially in the smaller university locations with comparatively poor local transport connections Schmalkalden, Ilmenau or Nordhausen The Germany ticket, which is significantly more expensive compared to the semester ticket, is not very attractive, according to the conference of Thuringian student bodies. The introduction at large university locations is against this Erfurt and Jena probably.
