For years, German diplomacy has tried to urge Russia to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis. Now she is left with nothing.

It is his most difficult walk so far and it is only by chance that he does not have to walk it alone. The Chancellor has had a short night and a half since he was certain that the worst fears in Eastern Europe were beginning to come true. In the Chancellery, Olaf Scholz steps in front of the cameras to put this situation into words. “These are very difficult days and hours for Europe. Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, war is looming in Eastern Europe. It is our job to avert such a catastrophe,” says Scholz. On his right is Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, who is visiting Berlin. A joint press conference was on the agenda anyway. The Chancellor has a man at his side who is familiar with bloody conflicts. The Good Friday Agreement settled a conflict in Ireland that seemed almost insoluble.
