Germany eliminates its electricity bonus earlier than expected

In Germany, the purchase of an electric car was until now subsidized, and the bonus could reach €6,750. The initial plan was to maintain this bonus, reduced to €4,000, until the end of 2024. But following a decision by the German Court of Auditors, which prohibits the reallocation of unused Corona emergency funds elsewhere, the 2024 budget of the country is seriously undermined, and the federal government must cut spending. This means that, with immediate effect, assistance with the purchase of an electric car will be over.

Manufacturers take over

Without a doubt, this will cause EV sales to fall in one of the biggest markets in Europe. To initially limit the damage, certain automobile groups have decided to cover, to varying degrees, the bonus that the State no longer grants. VW, Audi, Stellantis, Mercedes and Kia have all announced measures in this direction. Launched in 2016, the plan to support the electrification of the automobile fleet had already cost Germany more than 10 billion euros.
