Germany and China: speeches in times of rivalry – politics

Germany and China meet for their seventh intergovernmental consultations in Berlin. Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls for an open exchange, Prime Minister Li Qiang avoids words about Ukraine. And questions from the press should not interfere.

For Amy Siu, the day was as good as over in the morning. She carefully prepared a vigil for the victims of Hong Kong’s oppression, registered everything properly and spoke to the police. She and her fellow campaigners want to be seen and to see something while the German-Chinese government consultations are being held in the chancellery. As it turns out, the little spot assigned to Siu in the direction of Berlin Central Station is not directly in front of the government headquarters. Instead, what Siu calls the “big red group” – a good hundred Chinese students in red T-shirts, adorned with little German and Chinese flags – romp around there.
