29th minute: Goal for Austria. Gregoritsch pins a long, high ball to Baumgartner with a header. The Leipziger has a lot of space and passes it to Sabitzer on the left. The Dortmund player dances with Tah, who can’t keep up at all, moves inwards and then shoots into the bottom left corner. Trapp has no chance.

28th minute: Goretzka with a strong win over the ball in midfield. But Gnabry then delays the game. A moment later the ball is back in the Austrian’s ranks, who become more active and gradually take control of the game.

24th minute: The DFB team has not yet been able to score a goal. Niclas Füllkrug in the forward line has not yet taken part in the game.

21st minute: Austria is becoming more self-confident and more dangerous. The hosts are always looking for Gregoritsch at the top. But Rüdiger can now clarify things well.

16th minute: Huge opportunity for Austria! A long ball to Gregoritsch almost leads to the first goal. The attacker runs away from Rüdiger and Hummels, but cannot prevail against Trapp in a 1-on-1. The Frankfurt keeper stands there for a long time and then reacts brilliantly to the Freiburg goalkeeper.

15th minute: Germany is in control and repeatedly puts the home team under pressure early on. Rangnick’s team has so far barely been able to free themselves and lose the ball early.

13th minute: Austria quickly takes a free kick near the halfway line. Alaba chips the ball to Gregoritsch in the penalty area. The striker takes the pass directly, but doesn’t hit the ball properly and misses a good opportunity.

11th minute: Leroy Sané takes the free kick and hits the ball into the Austrian wall.

9th minute: Germany has more possession of the ball and is taking control of the game. Pass by pass, Germany approaches the attacking third and now takes a free kick about 30 meters in front of Schlager’s box.

5th minute: For the first time, Germany plays its way in front of the opposing goal via Gnabry and Havertz. Two crosses and no finish are the result of the first wave of attack.

2nd minute: After a bad pass from Rüdiger, Austria got their first chance of the game. In the end, Baumgartner shoots from a tight angle. Trapp defends the corner, which yields nothing.

1st minute: Kicking off. The game begins. Germany has the ball.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 8:42 p.m.: It starts in a few minutes. The teams are already entering the field. The national anthems will soon be heard.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 8:38 p.m.: At ZDF, national coach Nagelsmann said before the game about the change from Kimmich to Goretzka that they wanted to remain “variable”. There is therefore no clear first eleven. The coach is planning a lot more with “14 to 15 players” who will play most of the games in next summer’s tournament.

After the numerous defeats in 2023, a win against Austria is almost mandatory: “We are under a bit of pressure to get results. But we also have fashion pressure,” said Nagelsmann.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 8:28 p.m.: With Julian Brandt, Leroy Sané, Ilkay Gündogan and Antonio Rüdiger, there are four players in the DFB starting eleven who were also in the starting line-up in the last meeting with Austria in 2018.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 8:16 p.m.: One of the few bright spots of the German national team’s recent past is Niclas Füllkrug. The attacker, who now plays for Borussia Dortmund, scores reliably.

Since his debut around a year ago in the friendly against Oman, “Fülle” has scored ten times in a total of twelve international matches. The 30-year-old is a beacon of hope both against Austria and for the home European Championship.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 7:57 p.m.: But it’s not just Germany that relies on quality from the Bundesliga. Austria starts with eight professionals who earn their money in Germany.

Lienhart from SC Freiburg and Mwene from Mainz 05 defend. The three Leipzig hitters, Seiwald and Baumgartner, start in midfield together with Dortmund’s Sabitzer and the Bayern professional Laimer. At the front, Gregoritsch from Freiburg storms all alone.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 7:40 p.m.: The DFB has already announced the line-up for the international match against Austria. National coach Nagelsmann makes a total of three changes to the starting lineup.

As expected, Mats Hummels starts. Jonathan Tah moves to the right, Henrichs to the bench. In addition, Leon Goretzka is allowed to play in the Ernst Happel Stadium from the start. His teammate Joshua Kimmich is out for this. In the offensive line, Serge Gnabry moves into the first eleven for Florian Wirtz.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 7:28 p.m.: While the German senior national team is still in an almost historic low phase and the DFB’s U21s haven’t necessarily covered themselves in glory recently, the German U17s are at least giving a little hope.

The U17 World Cup is currently taking place in Indonesia. In the morning, Germany won 3-2 against the USA and is now in the quarter-finals. Coach Michael Prus’ team will face Spain there. However, these talents do not yet play a role for the 2024 European Championship. Nevertheless, this partial success is certainly a result that the German Football Association gratefully accepts after many disappointing tournaments.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 7:06 p.m.: The two coaches Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick know each other relatively well from their days together in Hoffenheim and Leipzig. Before the encounter, Rangnick had a lot of praise for his old companion at the press conference: “Germany has the chance to play a really good Euro because they have the quality of players and a real top coach in Julian.”

Rangnick himself was repeatedly mentioned as the national coach of the German national team, but “at no time” did he have any discussions with those responsible for the DFB.

Update from Tuesday (November 21st), 6:27 p.m.: The record of the Austrians coached by Ralf Rangnick against Germany is rather sobering. The Alpine republic was only able to win nine of the 40 meetings against its big neighbor. After Austria lost nine times in a row against Germany since 1994, the underdog broke the losing streak in the last duel.

The red-whites won 2-1 in a friendly match in Klagenfurt in 2018. At that time, ex-Frankfurt player Martin Hinteregger and former Schalke player Alessandro Schöpf turned the game in the underdogs’ favor after Mesut Özil’s opening goal. Can Austria repeat the feat today?

First report from Tuesday (November 21st), 5:45 p.m.: Vienna – The German national team simply cannot get going a few months before the start of the home European Championship. The euphoria following the hiring of Julian Nagelsmann as the new national coach has already subsided significantly after the disappointing 2-3 defeat against Turkey. The DFB team’s style of play seems more organized, but the results remain disappointing. The last international match of the year is in Vienna against the rivals from Austria.

Live ticker: Will Germany end the international year with a win?

The football year after the catastrophic 2022 World Cup in Qatar and before the historic 2024 European Championship in their own country did not go according to plan for the German national team. Out of ten friendly games, the DFB team was only able to win the start of the year against Peru (2-0), Rudi Völler’s short comeback against France (2-1) and Julian Nagelsmann’s debut against the USA (3-1). There were also two draws and five defeats.

The German team definitely wants to end the year with a win against Austria so that they can start the European Championship year with a bit of tailwind in March. However, major experiments against the small neighbor are not to be expected. Coach Nagelsmann revealed this at the press conference before the game: “There won’t be any major changes, just slight adjustments.” However, Mats Hummels could return to the starting line-up after his back problems and replace Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah in central defense.

Austria is a difficult task for the DFB team

The task in Austria will by no means be a sure-fire success for the DFB team. Unlike Nagelsmann’s team, the Austrians have already found themselves as a team and have also successfully qualified for the 2024 European Championship. In addition to the defeat and the draw (1:1) against group winners Belgium, the Alpine country was able to win all games.

Despite the different quality of the squad, Austria can be expected to pull off a surprise win against the reeling Germans. The game between the two rivals kicks off at 8:45 p.m. We accompany the prestigious meeting in Live ticker. (jsk)
