Status: 19.08.2022 21:04

The German weather service predicts severe weather with heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms for large parts of the country. The risk of severe weather is highest near the Alps. Storms in western Austria caused flooding.

In the evening and in the coming night it threatens to get wet and stormy in some parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns in the south and south-east of prolonged and locally heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms. The amounts of rain will then gradually move towards the north-east.

Locally heavy rain with precipitation of 20 to 40 liters per square meter could occur in a short time until Saturday morning or Saturday morning. In some cases, the DWD also warns of “stormy developments” with rainfall of up to 60 liters per square meter within a few hours.

In addition, there can be individual showers or thunderstorms in the north-east with a local risk of heavy rain of up to 20 liters per square meter in a short time.

According to the DWD, isolated thunderstorms are also possible in the west during the night. On Saturday there will be isolated, locally prominent thunderstorms from west to east with heavy rain, hail and stiff to stormy gusts.

Extreme storms possible at the edge of the Alps

At the edge of the Alps is valid until Saturday morning a storm warning of extremely heavy continuous rain with up to 140 liters per square meter. According to the DWD, 50 to 80 liters per square meter are still possible in other parts of Bavaria and the south-east of Baden-Württemberg. This means: possible flooding of basements and streets, flooding of streams and rivers, flooding of streets and landslides. The population was asked to close windows and doors.

Severe weather in Austria: floods in Vorarlberg

Storms in western Austria caused flooding on Friday evening. In the state of Vorarlberg, roads near Bregenz on Lake Constance were flooded, as can be seen in pictures. As the broadcaster ORF reported, the fire brigade was already on duty in the region more frequently on Friday night, among other things because of flooded basements. Because of the constant rain, several underpasses and stretches of road were flooded on Friday – train connections were also affected.
