Gérard Prêcheur tackles the style of play of the Lyonnaises, still crowned champions of France

Sonia Bompastor did not hide it, it was “in pain” that Olympique Lyonnais won their 16th French championship title, Sunday at the Parc des Princes (0-1). “Manhandled” by Paris Saint-Germain, who once again failed in second place in women’s D1 (six lengths from OL), Ada Hegerberg’s partners quickly drew criticism from Parisian coach Gérard Preacher.

“It’s really frustrating because the game plan almost worked, noted the former OL coach (from 2014 to 2017). Something is missing. The girls were superb. As a fan of women’s football, in twenty-three years in this environment, I have tried to play everywhere I have been. And there, seeing a team like Lyon, champion of France and Europe, produce such a game, it frustrates me…”

“I am no longer old enough to build”

The 63-year-old coach, whose name had recently been mentioned to replace Corinne Deacon at the head of the French women’s team (before the choice of Hervé Renard), continued his tackle against the minimalist game put in place by the Lyonnaises, also victorious in the Coupe de France the previous week against PSG (2-1): “It is not with this type of football that we are going to attract people”.

Before recognizing all the same that “Lyon deserves its title by being intrinsically better than us”. Gérard Prêcheur concluded his press conference on Sunday by leaving a (big) doubt about his desire to continue the adventure at PSG: “I ask myself the question because I am no longer very young anyway. I am 63 years old, I am no longer old enough to build”.
