The man who was sentenced to a long prison sentence in 2021 for the murder of the black man George Floyd was attacked and injured in the Tucson prison, according to media reports. He was apparently stabbed by a fellow prisoner.

Former US police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of the murder of African-American George Floyd in 2021, was apparently stabbed in prison on Friday. This was reported by several US media outlets, including the New York Times and CNN, citing anonymous sources.

The Bureau of Prisons said an inmate was attacked at the Tucson prison. Prison staff initiated life-saving measures. The person being treated was then taken to a hospital for further treatment. No employees were injured in the incident. The detention center did not provide a name for the victim.

Chauvin prevented Loyd from breathing for nine minutes

In May 2020, George Floyd was killed in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. Videos documented how police officers pushed the unarmed man to the ground. The white officer Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for a good nine minutes while Floyd pleaded to let him breathe.

Floyd’s complaint “I can’t breathe” – “I can’t breathe” or “I can’t breathe” – went around the world and became a motto of the anti-racism movement Black Lives Matter. The case led to nationwide protests against police violence and racism.

Long prison sentence for Chauvin, accomplice convicted

Chauvin was sentenced in June 2021 to 22 years and six months in prison for second-degree murder – in German law this roughly corresponds to manslaughter in a serious case. A few days ago, the Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal. Chauvin had argued that he did not receive a fair trial.

The two police officers who pinned Floyd to the ground along with Chauvin later pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting manslaughter. They were sentenced to 36 and 42 months in prison, respectively.
