Women continue to be underrepresented in technical professions, as are men in geriatric care. But that is increasingly changing, reports the Federal Statistical Office.
The gender differences in career choices between women and men have decreased over the past ten years. The proportion of women in technical research and development will rise to 18 percent in 2023, the Federal Statistical Office announced on the occasion of “Girls and Boys Day” next Thursday. Ten years earlier the proportion was eleven percent. In IT, the approximately 64,000 working women made up almost 18 percent, up from 14 percent in 2013.
There were similar developments in forestry, hunting and landscape management, with a current proportion of women of 19 percent, up from ten percent in 2013. In the police and prison system, the proportion of female officers grew from 20 to a good 28 percent or 97,000 people.

On the other hand, a tendency towards higher male participation was observed in some professional groups that were historically more likely to be chosen by women. The proportion of men in personal care professions rose by eight points to 18 percent.
103,000 men worked in geriatric care, and their proportion rose from around 13 to 17 percent. When selling food, the male proportion of the workforce was recently 23 percent, compared to 14 percent ten years earlier.
