Most recently, he was seriously ill with myelodysplastic syndrome, which in the worst case can lead to blood cancer. A stem cell transplant had to be postponed because of pneumonia. “We had hoped to the last. He was seriously ill for a long time. In the past few weeks things have been up and down,” his wife Marita Streich told the dpa news agency.

Streich scored 55 goals in 102 international matches and played in 378 East German Oberliga games for Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Magdeburg, where he spent his most successful time.

Overall, he scored 229 goals in the highest DDR league and was top scorer four times. In 1979 and 1983, “Strich”, as he was nicknamed, was footballer of the year.
