Gasset confirms its successful baptism, Marseille relaunch in the race for Europe

OM won against Montpellier this Sunday, at the end of the 23rd day of Ligue 1 (4-1). Three days after eliminating Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League, Jean-Louis Gasset’s team ended its poor series in the championship.

The initial clearing now suggests a real improvement. Three days after beating Shakhtar Donetsk, in the second leg of the Europa League (3-1), OM dominated Montpellier this Sunday, at the end of the 23rd day of Ligue 1 (4-1). Two successes which validate the successful debut of Jean-Louis Gasset on the Marseille bench. After replacing Gennaro Gattuso, the former Ivory Coast coach revived a team on the verge of implosion.

Against MHSC, OM got off to a very bad start, quickly conceding a goal from Musa Al-Taamari, after a big error from Samuel Gigot (5th). But the teammates of Pau Lopez, saved twice by his posts during the meeting, were able to find the mental resources to reverse the situation. Iliman Ndiaye, very active in attack, equalized by scoring his third goal in the OM jersey (31st), the first at the Vélodrome (all competitions combined).

Aubameyang’s double

Already decisive against Shakhtar, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then scored a double, on an offering from Chancel Mbemba (43rd), then by transforming a penalty obtained by Iliman Ndiaye (62nd). A csc from Falaye Sacko added to the score at the end of the match (82nd). Enough to delight the Marseille supporters, who made their voices heard in the stands to welcome this encouraging start to the chapter.

Before this weekend, the Olympians remained in six games without a victory in the league. Here they are now ninth, five points behind the European places. An improvement to be confirmed next Saturday in Clermont (9 p.m.), before hosting Villarreal on March 7, in the round of 16 first leg of the Europe League (9 p.m.). For Montpellier, on the other hand, the situation becomes complicated. Michel Der Zakarian’s men, 15th, are tied on points with Lorient, who occupy the play-off place.
