Garching: Solar lamps for the Bürgerplatz – district of Munich

Like a huge bunch of grapes, the ball lamps lie on the square in front of the Garching town hall. After many decades, the old street lamps have become obsolete and are being replaced by new solar lights. From now on, these should illuminate the Bürgerplatz in a more environmentally friendly and targeted manner, without at the same time throwing their glow into the living rooms of the apartments above. The city administration hopes that problems with cable damage will also be a thing of the past. Because the new solar lights feed themselves from their batteries and use sunlight as an energy source. The fact that they are now being used for the first time in the winter months can probably be seen as an endurance test. If the location is not suitable, the lights can also be moved. The old lanterns, on the other hand, have been preserved further ahead on the town hall square. But in the coming year they will get new light sources, energy-saving LEDs. Overall, Garching plans to convert a large part of its street lighting to LED in the coming months. Almost 1800 lanterns should shine more sustainably by next autumn.
