Garching – electricity from the lantern – district of Munich

Garching gets new street lamps. Thanks to energy-saving LED lights and modern lamps in central locations and streets, the city wants to use less energy soon. On this occasion, the CSU parliamentary group in the city council is now proposing that the municipality should kill two birds with one stone and install charging points for electric vehicles at the lanterns. Several companies offer compact charging station models that, according to the manufacturer, can be easily attached to lampposts or integrated into them. The CSU refers, for example, to the “Heinz” lantern charging point from Ubitricity, a subsidiary of the Shell group. This model is docked to the local power grid via the lantern and charges relatively slowly with low charging power of between 3.7 and 50 kilowatts. Since the cars park in one place overnight but for a long time, this would not be a problem, so the argument goes. Especially for people who live for rent and do not have a charging station in the house or garage, such additional charging stations right in front of the front door would be an advantage, says CSU parliamentary group spokesman Jürgen Ascherl. The Garching administration must now examine the application.
