“Game of Thrones” fans have been waiting for the conclusion of the book series for a long time. Author George RR Martin takes his time, but at least reveals a few details.

It’s been three years since the last episode of “Game of Thrones” aired. Other series and films have long been discussed, so that it has almost been forgotten that something is still missing: The book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George RR Martin, which formed the basis for the successful series, is still available not completed.

Most recently, the volume “Drachenreigen” was published in German in 2012. Since then, fans have been waiting for the last two books in the novel series. It is clear that the penultimate volume will be called “The Winds Of Winter”, but nobody knows when – and if at all – it will appear. Apparently not even the author himself, who has now reported back in a blog post with a longer update on his project.

“Game of Thrones” ending differ in book and series

The big news for fans of the novel and series: Martin reveals that the ending of the book series will differ from the ending of the series. The writer has supported the series makers in their work and told them in which direction his story should develop. But over the years his vision of the plot has changed: “I write, I rewrite, I restructure, I tear apart and rewrite, I go through doors that lead nowhere and doors that open to wonder .”

The author compares himself to a gardener who, unlike an architect, does not have a clear result in mind from the outset. With Martin, everything is in flux: “Sounds crazy, I know, but that’s how I write, it’s always been like that.” “Yes, some of the things that you saw in ‘Game of Thrones’ you will also see in ‘The Winds of Winter’ (although maybe not in the same way). But a lot of the rest will be very different.”

Martin doesn’t want to reveal more about the end of his five-volume series: “You have to wait until I get there.” Just this much: Some of the characters who die in “Game of Thrones” will survive in the books – and vice versa. So fans of “Game of Thrones” have to be patient. First up for her is the prequel House of the Dragon, a series about House Targaryen that starts in August – definitely ahead of George RR Martin’s next book.
