Gabriel Attal denounces an “unacceptable” situation

The government spokesperson, Gabriel Attal, denounced this Sunday morning a situation “intolerable and unacceptable” in Guadeloupe, where the challenge to the vaccination obligation of caregivers degenerates into blockages and violence. The reinforcements of police and gendarmes sent from metropolitan France, in particular units of the GIGN and the Raid, must arrive on Sunday in the island, he said in an interview with Europe 1, CNews and The echoes.

“There is a situation in Guadeloupe which is absolutely intolerable and unacceptable”, judged the spokesperson, estimating that the blockages, fires and looting of the last days are the fact of a “small minority”. Since the summer, the vaccination rate has increased in Guadeloupe, with a rate of nearly 90% of caregivers vaccinated, and approaching 50% in the general population.

Threatened caregivers

“This small minority which blocked by words, by words (…), today it is radicalized and it tries to block them, to intimidate them by violence”, he denounced, evoking ” caregivers threatened ”,“ pharmacies prevented from opening ”and“ ambulances blocked on roadblocks ”.

The General Union of Workers of Guadeloupe (UGTG), at the forefront of the protest shaking the island, called on Saturday “to continue the mobilization and strengthen the pickets of popular demands”, in a statement.

During the night from Friday to Saturday, marked by numerous degradations, police and gendarmes were targeted by gunfire, causing a slight injury, despite the curfew imposed from Friday evening.
