Future in Munich or at the DFB? Matthew speaks out

What’s next for Julian Nagelsmann? For record national player Lothar Matthäus, the coach’s return to Munich would be “something special”.

Record national player Lothar Matthäus sees “something very special” in the thought process about national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s return to FC Bayern. When Nagelsmann was on leave in Munich last March, he thought it was a mistake, wrote Matthäus (63) in his column for the TV channel Sky. “For me, Nagelsmann was a good fit for Bayern Munich. Whether he does that again, albeit under different managers and under a different hierarchy, is up to him.”

Nagelsmann’s contract, who took over the DFB team last September, expires after the home European Championships in the summer (June 14th to July 14th). Before and after the 2-0 win against France in Lyon, there were discussions about an extension. “I’m willing to play a maximally successful European Championship, that’s my main focus,” said Nagelsmann after DFB President Bernd Neuendorf confirmed that the association was very satisfied with the national coach.

An era in the national team?

Nagelsmann, who became champion with Bayern in 2022, wanted clarity before the tournament. “Nagelsmann’s future has been discussed a lot recently and is currently being discussed,” wrote Matthäus. “I would like this to be discussed behind closed doors and not aired in public.”

He can imagine “that it would be a big challenge for Julian to shape an era with the national team, but I assume that at his age he wants to work with a team every day and I think that he has offers from clubs that interest him.”
