The special feature of the work of the cartoonist Miriam Wurster, who also illustrates for the SZ, is that she is a political illustrator, but politicians practically never appear in her pictures. Wurster comments on rents, demonstrations, tank or migration debates, civil wars and dealings with neo-Nazis, primarily by letting the people appear. Sometimes their cartoons depict the unreasonable demands that people are subjected to: such as the toothless tiger that his guards call “rent control.”
Sometimes she holds a mirror up to people: according to the couple who have settled into their couch in front of the flat screen, but realize: “This refugee issue is pushing me to the limits of my endurance.” The Kunstmann publishing house has now compiled the cartoons that it considers to be among their best into a book.
