From next year: DHL makes heavy parcels less attractive

Deutsche Post DHL is increasing its package prices. Business customers are directly affected. Private customers only feel this when they have particularly heavy goods delivered by DHL.

The Deutsche Post subsidiary DHL is increasing the cost of parcels. Initially, only business customers are affected. The higher prices apply from January 1, 2022, as the group announced today.

Concrete surcharges in percent were not mentioned. However, the company announced that deliveries of more than 20 kilograms were “particularly affected”. After all, sorting and delivering them is much more time-consuming.

Prices for private customers remain the same

For private customers nothing will change at first, because the prices for them will remain unchanged. Consumers only feel the price increase indirectly if online retailers charge more money for shipping – and this is likely to affect heavy products in particular.

Swiss Post justified its increase with investments in infrastructure and in climate-friendly transport. Already now, almost half of all delivery districts in Germany are delivering CO2-free with the help of e-mobility.

Swiss Post has list prices for business customers who ship up to 5,000 parcels annually. If a company sends more shipments via the Bonn group, individual contracts are agreed. The most important major customer of the Post is the online retailer Amazon, which is increasingly relying on its own “Amazon Logistics” service.
