Many people cannot imagine politicians engaged in ordinary leisure activities – such as exuberant dancing. That’s why a video by Friedrich Merz is amusing the internet.

Politicians are usually known as serious figures in neat suits or costumes, with serious faces and a straight posture. Many of us already find photos of Angela Merkel hiking or Cem Özdemir cycling strange – in normal everyday life it is somehow difficult to imagine political decision-makers. But of course politicians are only people who also have free time. And there they do things that look rather unusual to observers …

A video by the CDU chairman Friedrich Merz, 66, is currently causing amusement on the Internet. Because the politician was a guest at the summer party of the CDU/CSU in Berlin and put a brisk foot on the floor there when the 70s disco hit “Lady Bump” rang out from the speakers. With casual arm swings, but somewhat stiff hips, he grooved across the dance floor, while next to him some younger party members watched enthusiastically and were visibly happy about the prominent fellow dancer.

Of course, politicians are always in the public eye – and so Merz naturally has to put up with ridicule for his moody dance routine. He shared a video of the celebration himself on his Instagram channel, and the clip quickly made the rounds. The somewhat stiff dance style of the CDU leader was commented on with amusement on social networks: “The Sauerland comes through,” it says, for example, or: “I thought Fritze Merz was a new member of the Blue Man Group”. Someone else writes: “Looks like someone going hiking at the disco”, and also something mean: “Dude moth, that’s cringe level 1000!”

But at least there are also (almost) praiseworthy reviews of the dance: “More soul than Olaf,” someone wrote on Twitter. And: “But John Travolta can cut a slice of it”, or also: “Legend, he has the groove!” But one commentator asks perhaps the most important question of the evening: “Which cheeky rascal actually filmed?”
