Freight traffic: the railway wants more money from the state – economy

The federal government is to pay the railway subsidiary DB Cargo 300 million euros a year so that numerous companies are still connected to the rail network. Up to 2000 freight trains a day are at risk without higher subsidies.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) will hardly be happy about this bill, even if it’s only 60 euros per ton. But it’s just five million tons that are at best for climate protection – according to Deutsche Bahn. And then 300 million euros come together. The state-owned company Bahn would like to have that much money every year from the state, i.e. from the federal government. In order to be able to partially absorb the losses in freight traffic, in so-called single-wagon traffic. And to be able to shift some of the truck transport to rail. In a paper for the Bundestag, Deutsche Bahn calculates that five million tons of the climate-damaging gas carbon dioxide can be saved each year. According to the paper, there are up to 2,000 freight trains a day.
