Erlangen may be the smallest of Bavaria’s major cities, but its traffic problems are immense. More than 60,000 employees subject to social security contributions commute to Siemens and University City every day. Anyone who knows that fewer than 120,000 people live there understands the dimensions of Erlangen’s challenge. The city-surrounding railway, a tram from Nuremberg via Erlangen to Herzogenaurach, which has been envisaged for decades, is intended to provide relief. But since a referendum is still due in June, it is completely unclear whether this will actually happen.
