Franz Kafka’s “America” as an opera in Zurich. – Culture

There is no trace of angels, as mentioned in the libretto and the original by Franz Kafka. Instead, human-sized and colorful fairytale characters stand in front of a blue evening sky and a number of Christmas trees: Mickey Mouse, Shakespeare’s donkey Bottom, penguin, frog, king, wizard of Oz… The music is austere but expansively optimistic. “The big theater,” they chant, “always helps! … The big theater means the world! … The big theater that can use everyone!”
