Climate chaos cling to Poussin paintings

Frankfurt – On Tuesday in Dresden, members of the “Last Generation” superglued themselves to the “Sistine Madonna,” one of the most famous paintings in the world.

Now the climate chaos struck in Hesse: Penelope Frank (31) and Raul Semmler (38) immortalized their handprints in the Frankfurt Städel, one of the most important German art museums – on the frame of the painting “Thunderstorm landscape with Pyramus and Thisbe” (1651 by Nicolas Poussin made in France).

The reason: The activists want to show solidarity with Christian Bläul (40), who is in jail for nine days because of an adhesive campaign carried out in Stockholm.

This is how it happened: At around 1:15 p.m., the police were informed that two activists had stuck themselves to a painting in the Städel. A patrol immediately went to Schaumainkai am Main. Almost at the same time, the “Last Generation” published a press release and posted photos of the campaign on social networks.

The activists wrote: “Everyone knows, but silently accepts destruction and climate catastrophe. Everything will be destroyed – including art – if societal suicide does not end immediately.”

According to the activists, the picture is symbolic of the destructive course of current politics: “It shows Pyramus lying on the ground, next to him a sword, with which he fell to his death based on erroneous assumptions.”

Police were at the scene early Wednesday afternoon. Both activists were detached from the frame in the afternoon. According to the museum, the picture frame was damaged during the action, but it is still being checked to what extent.

After all, a Städel spokeswoman confirmed that despite the protest, operations in the museum continued as normal.

According to the police, the museum filed a complaint against the activists on Wednesday afternoon.
