Frankfurt: Heavy rain leads to dozens of flight cancellations – Panorama

Floods, flooded basements, canceled flights: the heavy rain has had an impact in parts of Germany. Due to the rain over Frankfurt, dozens of flights were canceled at the airport there: On Wednesday evening, large amounts of water had collected on the apron, among other things, said an airport spokesman. Numerous flights were cancelled, flights could not take off on time or had to be diverted to other airports.

Ground handling at the airport was halted for more than two hours, another spokesman said. Because of the late resumption of clearance, 34 machines could not have taken off in time on Wednesday evening, said the spokesman. Other flights had already been canceled by the airlines themselves.

On the Airport website about 70 flight cancellations were noted before the start of the night flight ban. 23 planned arrivals were also diverted to other airports due to the night flight ban. According to initial estimates by Frankfurt Airport, a four-digit number of passengers were affected by the problems.

There were also storms in other parts of Germany, but they did not seem to have any serious consequences. In Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia flooded basements during the night. Manhole covers were also lifted by the enormous amount of rain, police said. There were numerous fire brigade operations as a result of the heavy rain.

Hundreds of firefighters were deployed in southern Hesse, said a police spokesman. Flooded cellars and flooded streets and underpasses occupied the forces. The exact number of missions was not yet known. The German Weather Service (DWD) had issued a warning of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain from Wednesday evening for all of Hesse and other parts of Germany.
