Frank Castorf stages Dante’s “Divine Comedy” in Belgrade – Culture

Since the end of his cult directorship at the Berlin Volksbühne, Frank Castorf has been a traveling director. You can book him. Most recently he has staged plays at the Staatstheater Dresden (Schiller), at the Schauspiel Köln (Molière) and at the Burgtheater in Vienna (Jelinek, Handke), even in St. Pölten in Lower Austria (a text by his ex Irina Kastrinidis). Anyone who buys the Castorf brand knows what they are getting: a highly energetic, time-, text- and body-intensive extreme theater in winding stage labyrinths. With a lot of live camera use, faces in close-ups and women in sharp fiddles. The set designer Aleksandar Denić and the costume designer Adriana Braga Peretzki are responsible for the look. Both design their own thing for each piece, and then Castorf has to work with it. His theater would not exist without them. It takes all three for the party.
