Four dead and around twenty injured following restaurant collapse

Thursday, at the very end of the day, four people died and around twenty others were injured in the collapse of a restaurant located in Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the tourist island of Mallorca in the Spanish archipelago of Balearic Islands, emergency services said. “There are four dead and 21 injured to varying degrees,” a spokeswoman for the archipelago’s emergency services told AFP.

According to this initial assessment, seven of the injured are in “very serious” condition and nine are in “serious” condition. People of “several nationalities” are among the victims, without us knowing more about their identity, the emergency services indicated in a message on the social network. “They were transferred to different hospitals in Palma”, the capital of the island of Mallorca, they added.

A drama in the middle of a tourist area

The collapse of the restaurant occurred in the tourist area of ​​Playa de Palma. Still according to emergency services, “the roof of a two-story building” housing the establishment collapsed. Many firefighters were deployed to the scene while ambulances transported the injured to hospital. During the night from Thursday to Friday, emergency services continued to work on site to check whether any victims were still trapped under the rubble. The street was cordoned off by police to allow rescuers to work.

At the moment, the reasons for the collapse of this restaurant are still unknown. According to witnesses cited by local media, the roof collapsed on part of the first floor. This site was very busy at the time of the tragedy and while the tourist season is already in full swing on this island, very popular with German and British tourists.

In a message on X, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was “closely following the consequences of the terrible collapse on Palma beach”. The socialist leader also “presented his condolences to the families of the deceased” and offered “all the necessary means and personnel” from the central State to help the regional authorities in the management of this accident.
