Formula 1 qualifying: Schumacher accident – Pérez secures pole

Status: 26.03.2022 21:02

Sergio Pérez has won Formula 1 qualifying in Saudi Arabia. For Lewis Hamilton, the session was over early. Mick Schumacher had a serious accident – and apparently luck in the misfortune.

The 32-year-old Mexican Pérez relegated Charles Leclerc to second place by 25 thousandths of a second. Behind the winner of the Formula 1 opening race a week ago in Bahrain, his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz finished third in qualifying on the ultra-fast track in Jeddah on Saturday (March 26, 2022). World champion Max Verstappen came fourth in the second Red Bull.

Early end for Hamilton

For record world champion Lewis Hamilton, it was a complete surprise that the knockout elimination was over in the first round. The 37-year-old Briton did not make it past 16th place in the Mercedes. “I’m so sorry, guys,” Hamilton radioed into the pits. Nico Hülkenberg, who again replaced the sick Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin, finished 18th.

All clear after Schumacher accident

Mick Schumacher, on the other hand, had made it into the second round in the Haas, where he crashed sideways into the barriers at high speed. The car belonging to the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher was thrown across the track and then came to a standstill, badly damaged.

Anxious minutes followed before the Haas racing team carefully gave the all-clear. The 23-year-old is doing well physically, said a spokesman for the Haas team. A few minutes later, team boss Günther Steiner said to the broadcaster “Sky”: “Mick is fully conscious, he has spoken to his mother. He has no external injuries. Now he is doing a safety check in the hospital. Mick is fine, that’s the most important thing .”

Mick Schumacher was nevertheless flown by helicopter to the King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah as a precaution. The race was temporarily interrupted for almost an hour. In the result list of the qualification he was listed in 14th place. Whether he can start this Sunday (7 p.m.) is still open.
