Lewis Hamilton was so close. In 2021 he missed his eighth world title in the controversial Formula 1 final. Hamilton will now drive for Mercedes at least until the end of 2025. The goal is clear.

The controversial World Cup final of 2021 is for Lewis Hamilton (38) was not the driving force behind his contract extension at Mercedes.

“I’m not a man of revenge. It’s not about revenge, it’s not about making amends,” said the record world champion after extending his contract until the end of 2025 before the Formula 1 European final in Monza this weekend. “That’s in the past. We can’t change anything about the past.”

He loves to race

Hamilton had only missed his eighth world title in the last race of the season in 2021 on the last lap after controversial decisions by the race management at the time. Max Verstappen was crowned world champion for the first time in the Red Bull and has dominated the pinnacle of motorsport ever since.

“I really believe that we can win more championships and races with this team. That’s where my energy goes,” emphasized Hamilton, who made his Formula 1 debut in 2007. “We still have unfinished business.”

Hamilton is almost 41 years old when the contract ends. “I didn’t think I would be at the age I am now and feel the way I do physically and mentally,” said Hamilton, who switched to Mercedes for the 2013 season to succeed Michael Schumacher. He just loves to keep racing.

Praise from Alonso

“His qualities as a racing driver are evident from his remarkable track record, but over our years together he has become a pillar and leader of our team,” said Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff of the 103-time Grand Prix winner.

The oldest driver in the field, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso (42), is happy about Hamilton’s contract extension and his longevity in Formula 1. “It shows his dedication, his love for racing,” said the Spaniard, who, in contrast to Hamilton has taken time out in the racing series.

Alonso was Hamilton’s first Formula 1 teammate at McLaren in 2007. The rivalry between the two almost ruined the racing team. “It’s great to have him for two more years. He’s one of the greatest in the sport,” Alonso said of his English rival.
