Angela Merkel is no longer in the Bundestag. But she could return to the Reichstag as a member of the Federal Assembly that elects the Federal President. The CDU parliamentary group in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has nominated the former chancellor.

Ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has been nominated by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania CDU parliamentary group for the Federal Assembly, which will elect the next Federal President. According to reports, the SPD parliamentary group wants to set up pop singer Roland Kaiser. In addition to Vice Prime Minister Simone Oldenburg, the Left nominated the singer Dirk Zöllner, as a spokeswoman said.

Merkel had her constituency in West Pomerania. According to NDR, the CDU said about her nomination that she wanted to “thank you a little for what she did for the country”.

Decision in the coming week

In addition to the members of the Bundestag from the federal state, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can send 16 other women and men to the Federal Assembly, which will elect the new Federal President on February 13, 2022. It consists of the 736 members of the Bundestag and 736 other voters who are determined by the state parliaments. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wants to run again as a candidate.

The state parliament in Schwerin will decide on the nominations of the parliamentary groups in the coming week.
