Continuous rain is followed by ice and snow. Winter is coming back to Germany – with a vengeance.

Winter returns with snow and Ice cream back to Germany. “The exceptionally mild westerly weather that has been going on for weeks, which has brought us lots of rain and floods, is now finally coming to an end,” said meteorologist Christian Herold from the German Weather Service on Saturday in Offenbach. “The weather situation is fundamentally changing to winter.”

Temperatures no longer rise above zero during the day. In the Alpine regions, 10 to 20 centimeters of snow could fall by Monday morning, and even up to 30 centimeters in the mountain areas. The nights will be bitterly cold with sometimes severe frost and temperatures down to minus 15 degrees.

According to Herold, the snowfall will soon ease again and give way to the sun. “While there is snow in the north and south, the regions in the middle have to prepare for a longer period of cold freeze,” says the meteorologist. Bald frost means frost on snow-free ground. This weather situation will remain largely stable until the end of next week, although fog and high fog will gradually appear.

The weather is determined by the strong high “Arbo”, which is building up over the northeast Atlantic and Western Europe, blocking the usual west-east path of low pressure areas and promoting the accumulation of massive cold air over Scandinavia. This is now being tapped more and more, explained Herold. “There is already a solid snow cover in the northeast, while in the south a low called Charlotte is causing heavier snowfall over northern Italy.”
