Flying classrooms only exist in novels – actually. In the elementary and middle school in Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, however, which is also appropriately called the Erich Kästner School, several classrooms actually sailed through the air this week. Of course, they were held by a huge truck-mounted crane, which placed the individual containers on and next to each other like Lego bricks. A two-storey container pavilion was created within a few days, which is intended to alleviate the school’s lack of space, which has been prevalent for years. Originally, the extension should have been completed by the beginning of this school year. But this schedule was thwarted above all by the lengthy approval process. In addition, the costs shot up – from an initially estimated 2.5 to 3.7 million euros.

Regardless of these additional expenses, the municipal council unanimously decided to purchase the container system. This includes eight classrooms and two group rooms, plus a team room and other adjoining rooms. According to Rector Torsten Bergmühl, the extension building is expected to be ready for occupancy at the end of May. The container facility is intended as an interim solution until the Erich Kästner School, which is in need of renovation, is either renovated or demolished and rebuilt – either at the current location or at a different location. In order to find the best solution for the elementary and middle school, the municipal council commissioned a feasibility study.
