In recent years it has often been in short supply: the flu vaccine. There have also been times in the past in Füssener Land when doctors had to send patients away because there was no longer any vaccine available. In 2022 they also had to struggle with delivery bottlenecks. This year Dr. Christian Stenner gives the all-clear: Not only he, but also his colleagues have all received sufficient vaccine, says the spokesman for the doctors in Füssen. “All family doctor’s practices are prepared” and vaccinations could start from October.

Vaccination makes sense from mid/late October

With autumn comes the season of colds and flu. “The infection period has already begun,” says Stenner. But why wait until October to get the flu vaccination? Ideally, a vaccination should only be given from mid/late October. Because then you also have in the months after Christmas, when experience shows that Flu wave rushes through the country, still has a good protective effect. Stenner believes it is premature to get vaccinated now. The doctor will therefore be offering a vaccination day in his practice on Saturday, October 21st.

Who should get vaccinated

And who should get vaccinated anyway? Older people and chronically ill people, says the Füssen doctor. The Standing Vaccination Commission also recommends the flu vaccination for all people aged 60 and over as well as people with an increased health risk due to an underlying illness (such as chronic respiratory diseases, heart or circulatory diseases, liver or kidney diseases, diabetes or multiple sclerosis). In the context of an increased occupational risk, people at increased risk (e.g. medical staff) or people who work in facilities with extensive public traffic or look after people at risk should also be vaccinated, says Stiko.
