Parts of Russia and Kazakhstan have been suffering from flooding for weeks. But even if the water level drops, the danger is not necessarily over.

In the Russian ones In flood areas, the water masses are forcing further evacuations. In the western Siberian region of Tyumen on the border with Kazakhstan, Governor Alexander Moor called on residents of the city of Ishim and neighboring counties to leave their homes as quickly as possible.

“You all know the danger. Take your valuables! Go to a safe place immediately!” Moor said in a video on Telegram. In the Tyumen region, the Ishim River overflowed its banks. The 2,450 kilometer long Ishim is a tributary of the Irtysh.

In the Orenburg region alone, around 15,000 houses are still under water

Another village also had to be evacuated in the town of Orsk in the Orenburg region, which has been affected by flooding since the beginning of April. The water level of the Ural River in the area is gradually decreasing. But a reservoir near the town of Tukai had overflowed and the water was threatening to flood the town, the Orsk city administration told the Interfax agency. In the Orenburg region alone, around 15,000 houses were still under water, the authorities said. Floods are also reported in the Siberian regions of Kurgan, Tomsk and Buryatia.

On the Russian side, Disaster Protection Minister Alexander Kurenkov flew to the flood areas in Kurgan on Tuesday. In neighboring Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited the flooded region in the north of his country. According to government figures in Astana, the authorities in the Central Asian state have brought 113,000 people to safety from the floods. Tokayev called the unusually high spring flood the country’s worst climate disaster in 80 years.
